The Father of Thermodynamics

On 24 August 1832, French engineer and physicist Nicolas Léonard Sadi Carnot died at the age of 36 during the cholera epidemic in Paris. Although sometimes described as a pioneer of the internal-combustion engine, Carnot's actual contribution was more fundamental: he established the theoretical principles governing the efficiency of heat engines.

In 1824, Carnot published Réflexions sur la puissance motrice du feu, a landmark work examining how heat could be converted into useful mechanical work. His analysis introduced what became known as the Carnot cycle, establishing the maximum theoretical efficiency of a heat engine operating between two temperatures.

Carnot's ideas initially received limited recognition, but later became fundamental to thermodynamics and influenced the work of scientists including Rudolf Clausius and Lord Kelvin. His theories remain relevant to steam turbines, internal-combustion engines, gas turbines and modern energy-conversion systems. Despite a career cut short by illness, Carnot left a scientific legacy that continues to underpin the engineering of virtually every thermal machine.
