A new life-cycle assessment from MAN shows how remanufacturing can sharply reduce the environmental footprint of combustion engines, extending product life while cutting demand for new resources.

MAN Truck & Bus has found that remanufacturing a D2842 LE622 railway engine can reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by 72% compared with producing and delivering a new engine. The finding comes from a life-cycle assessment conducted by the University of Bayreuth and independently validated by DEKRA Assurance Services.

The study recorded 2,355 kg of CO₂ equivalents for the remanufactured engine, compared with 8,320 kg for a new equivalent. Remanufacturing also cuts the use of new materials by 80% and component transport requirements by 87%.

The environmental benefit grows across multiple life cycles: remanufacturing once reduces emissions by 33% compared with using two new engines, rising to 45% when components are remanufactured repeatedly.

Why It Matters: As combustion engines remain necessary in sectors such as rail, shipping and power generation, extending their useful life offers a practical circular-economy route to reducing manufacturing-related emissions and resource consumption.
